This brief miniature was written in 90 minutes on 11 August 2016 in my office at the University of Melbourne in Parkville to demonstrate MIDI editing on a Disklavier as a Composition Program group lesson. Initially it felt like doing an exam with an exact ‘pens down’ looming. But as the music emerged it felt celestial and I named the piece Night Sky. And having put a name to it, my thoughts then turned to Catherine Sullivan, a fine emerging composer who graduated MMus and recently passed away too early at the age of 34. This celestial fragment is in memory of her.
